Hi all, Coach Lauren here. Happy start to summer break!
You may be familiar with the yin-yang symbol, but have you ever heard of yin and yang energies? These are two complementary energies we all have in our lives, and we need both in order to feel balanced.
“Yang” energy is the “doing” or “outward” energy. Yang is traditionally considered “summer energy” because it is bright and action-packed. It is lively, energetic, structured, and goal-oriented. This is sometimes called the “Sun energy” or “masculine energy” (though all people, not just men, experience this energy - which is why I personally prefer the term “yang”). This is the energy that gives you the discipline to get up and do a cardio workout first thing in the morning. It’s the energy that helps you plan a vacation and hit deadlines. It’s the energy that keeps you moving forward toward your goals.
“Yin” energy, on the other hand, is the “being” or “inward” energy. Yin is traditionally considered “winter energy” because it pairs well with a cozy blanket and cup of tea. It is intuitive, flow-based, introspective, and relaxed. This is also called the “Moon energy” or “feminine energy” (though again, all people possess this, not just women). This is the energy that helps you truly feel rested. It is waking up on a beach vacation with no plan and spontaneously deciding to read a good book. It is the spark of inspiration that serves as the groundwork for setting goals. It is the energy that brings you home to yourself.
As mentioned, both energies are important. If you spend your whole life generating output (yang) but never reflecting inward (yin), then you’ll burn out. Conversely, if you spend your whole life going with the flow (yin) and never setting goals (yang), then you’ll likely spin your wheels.
Although yang is considered the “official” summer energy, I like to encourage folks to intentionally build in some yin time too. After all, what’s summer if you’re constantly on the move and not taking time to make smores while staring at a campfire and contemplating life?
