Your boss may still be difficult. Your partner may still disappoint you. Your children may make choices you don’t understand. That’s life, and it doesn’t make you inadequate. It makes you human.

This month, Coach Dorene explores why personal ownership is at the heart of living a life of impact. While we can’t control every circumstance, we can choose what happens next. Read this month’s blog for practical ways to take ownership of your mindset, your choices, and the life you’re creating.

It Starts With Me

When I started ithrive31, I chose that little lowercase “i” very intentionally.

It isn’t just part of our name... it represents a philosophy.

It reminds us that while we can’t control everything that happens in our lives, we are always responsible for how we respond. To me, the “i” stands for personal ownership and accountability and the belief that our greatest impact begins with ourselves.

I’ve been blessed to have incredible people in my life. Family, friends, mentors, coaches, and colleagues who challenge me, encourage me, and help me become a better person. I genuinely believe we need one another. We are wired for impact through our connection with others.

But I’ve also learned something equally important.

At the end of the day, no one else is responsible for my life.

I am solely responsible:

...for my happiness.

...for my attitude.

...for my results.

...for my choices.

I’m responsible for the effort I put toward the life I want to create.

And I’m responsible for the mindset I bring into every room I enter.

That doesn’t mean I’m responsible for everything that happens to me. It means I’m responsible for what I choose to do with it.

That’s what personal ownership is all about.

It’s easy to blame circumstances when life isn’t going the way we’d hoped. It’s tempting to believe we’d be happier if someone else would simply change, communicate differently, appreciate us more, or meet our expectations.

We all know, life doesn’t work that way.

Your boss may still be difficult. Your partner may still disappoint you. Your children may make choices that upset you. Unexpected setbacks will happen, and life won’t always feel fair.

Ownership isn’t pretending those things don’t matter.

It’s recognizing that while we can’t control other people or every circumstance, we are always 100% responsible for how we respond.

That’s where our greatest influence and our greatest freedom begin.

For me, sometimes ownership means recognizing that I’m the problem. Instead of blaming my partner, I have to own how I move through it. Am I bringing stress into the conversation? Am I only seeing my point of view? Am I showing compassion and acceptance?

Other times, ownership means accepting that the results I’m getting are often connected to the actions I’ve taken, or haven’t taken. That’s not meant to create guilt. It’s meant to create possibility. Because if my actions helped create today’s results, my actions can also help create tomorrow’s.

Ownership isn’t about accepting responsibility for everything that happens to you.

It’s about accepting responsibility for what happens next.

So here’s a challenge to take this concept into practicality.

Think about the next 31 days...

What’s one area of your life where you could step more fully into personal ownership?

  • Maybe it’s protecting your energy by engaging in activities that inspire you instead of filling your mind with constant negativity.

  • Maybe it’s spending more time with people who encourage you to become your best self.

  • Maybe it’s making peace with someone you’ve been in conflict with. Forgiveness is a choice. It doesn’t excuse what happened, but it can free you from carrying the weight of it.

  • Maybe it’s walking out of your office more often, connecting with your team, and being intentional about the energy you bring to those interactions.

  • Or maybe it’s something completely different.

The point isn’t to change your whole life overnight.

The point is to choose one thing that’s yours to own. Something you want to see differently.  Then own it.

Start small.

One choice becomes another.

One action creates momentum.

Momentum creates results.

That’s why ithrive31 is our name. Lasting change rarely happens all at once. It happens one intentional choice at a time as we take ownership of the one, precious life we’ve been given.

Because in the end, the greatest impact you’ll ever have is over the person you see in the mirror.

It starts with you.
