Momentum is about staying motivated. Motivation alone will often get you started, but progress doesn’t come from waiting until you “feel like it.” Momentum is something you either build intentionally or quietly let slip away. It comes from showing up consistently. It comes from discipline and commitment.
Building team momentum also requires setting clear, achievable goals. Consider structured frameworks like SMART goals for setting objectives that are Specific, Measurable, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Here at ithrive31® we use BRITE goals: Balanced, Realistic, Innovative, Time for Me, and Energizing.
Speaking of energizing, I've worked with leaders who wonder why their teams are disengaged. They seem to be simply going through the motions. And when we dig deeper, the answer is almost always the same. Nobody is paying attention to energy.
Energy in a team is like a fire. It needs fuel, it needs oxygen, and it needs someone tending to it. Left alone, even the best fires go out.
Positive energy is not toxic positivity. It’s not pretending everything is fine. It’s choosing, even in the hard moments, to look for what’s possible.
Leaders must model positive energy, provide necessary resources, and empower team members to take ownership. Consistently aligning daily actions with a compelling, shared vision builds trust and sustains forward motion = momentum.
Small things matter more than most leaders realize. Positive energy might look like a genuine acknowledgment. A win celebrated, not just noted and moved on from. A conversation that reminds someone why the work they're doing actually matters.
Leader rounding – actively visiting team members and walking the floor – is essential for increasing visibility, building trust, and boosting morale. This practice allows leaders to understand day-to-day operations, foster open communications, and cultivate an environment of transparency.
What are you doing this week to actively build momentum and positive energy in the people around you?
