Communicating from the inside out by starting with the why (purpose) before the what (process) is at the heart of Simon Sinek's famous TED Talk, How Great Leaders Inspire Action (it’s consistently ranked as the second or third most-viewed TED Talk video of all time)! However, the traditional approach is for leaders to communicate from the outside in, starting with the what and ending with the why. Hmm…

Bottom line up front (BLUF): when you are clear on your why (purpose), it gives meaning and inspiration for doing the what.

Also, it’s important to remember that what you do doesn’t define who you are

Your inherent worth and your identity come from your character, your values, and your principles, not your job titles, day-to-day tasks, or even your mistakes.

Who you are as a person is what shapes how you approach your actions – things like your empathy, integrity, and ethics. Not the other way around!

A lot of leaders I work with are told they’re supposed to lead with purpose. But, what if you’re not sure what your purpose IS

Discovering your why isn’t always some big “a-ha” moment. Your purpose might show up gradually through the work you keep going back to or the people you keep showing up for. You simply have to notice it.

Look at what brings you energy or what you care about most. For example, if you consistently lead with integrity, invest in your team’s growth, or push for decisions that reflect your key values, you might already be living your purpose without having named it.

What you’re already doing IS purpose-driven leadership? It just might not have clear language attached to it yet.

The process of becoming a more conscious, values-aligned leader may itself be your purpose. It’s something that’s recognized over time and in the patterns of how you already lead. In other words, purpose isn’t found. It’s practiced.

You simply have to engage. Are you looking for support in uncovering your why? Let’s connect!
