The Autumnal Equinox is on September 22nd. As we shift from summer to fall, I’m striving to embrace nature’s reminder that changes are inevitable.
I love autumn. There's something special about those first crisp mornings when I get to reach for a sweater instead of a tank top. The air carries a different energy, and my schedule becomes a bit more intentional. Summer's slower pace give way to fall's more structured rhythm.
The changing leaves might mirror our own transformation as we embrace this season of change. We notice the shift from green leaves to hues of golden yellow and orange; a reminder of the passing of time and the beauty of fall colors. There's comfort in wrapping ourselves in soft scarves and cozy cardigans, like nature's subtle reminder to slow down and turn inward. It's a time for gathering, reflection, and preparation for the next season in life’s journey.
Here are a few ways to care for ourselves as we align with nature’s transition:
Create New Routines: Just like nature prepares for the coming winter, we can incorporate grounding practices in our daily routines. Establish a ritual around warmth and comfort, like journaling or lighting candles. Enjoy warming teas or coffee with seasonal spices like cinnamon, ginger, or pumpkin (pumpkin spice latte, anyone?). These routines can help us feel calmer and more rooted each day.
Get Outside: Spend 10-15 minutes outside during the morning hours, even as the days grow shorter. This helps regulate our circadian rhythm as daylight decreases and can also help to combat seasonal mood changes. Do some gentle stretching or simply observe how the light changes throughout the weeks. This practice helps our bodies gradually adjust to the shifting light patterns rather than fighting against them.
Embrace Letting Go: Like trees releasing their leaves, identify what no longer serves you. These can be old habits, commitments, or even a shift in mindset. On a more practical level, it might involve reorganizing or decluttering our closets, and then maybe holding a garage sale or donation drop-off. Strive to release things with a sense of gratitude in ways that help support your well-being.
Cultivate Gratitude: Fall is harvest season. We can work with autumn's natural energy of gathering, preparing, and gradually turning inward. This can support both physical and emotional well-being during seasonal transition at a more restorative pace. Taking time to acknowledge that you've grown and reflecting on what you’ve accomplished this year can be valuable. Don’t forget to celebrate both big wins and small moments, too.
Seek Connection: Supportive relationships can be crucial for navigating change. Transitions can be stressful and disorienting, and the end-of-summer melancholy can leave people feeling isolated or nostalgic. Connecting with others who understand these feelings can be comforting and normalizing. Reach out to friends and loved ones and strengthen your support network.
The natural rhythm of fall often makes it a good time for reassessing priorities and setting intentions for the coming months. It’s the perfect opportunity to step back and reflect on what truly matters. Working with a coach during these seasonal shifts can offer thoughtful perspective and structured support to help you create meaningful, lasting changes in how you approach your priorities and optimize your daily life. Change is the only constant. When we stop resisting and learn to flow with it, transitions transform from disruptions into invitations to evolve.
